Skin cancer is becoming more prevalent everyday and many people don't even know if they have it. The key to surviving skin cancer is like surviving any other cancer...early detection.

In this hub I will briefly discuss the 3 types of skin cancer and show you examples of each.

Melanoma

Melanoma is a very deadly form of skin cancer and is the end result of pigment cells dividing horribly out of control (a.k.a melanocyte cells). The only effective way to remove Melanoma before it becomes malignant it to have it surgically removed.

Sadly, Melanoma accounts for 75% of all skin cancer deaths.

Below are some pictures of what Melanoma looks like.

Basal Cell Skin Cancer

Basal cell skin cancer is the most common form of skin cancer and thankfully the least deadly. Basal cell skin cancer rarely spreads to other tissue.

Basal cell is usually treated with surgery (MOHS) to remove the affected area. Other treatments may be necessary such as radiation or topical chemo. Basal cell skin cancer is caused by repeated or intense exposures to ultraviolet light.

While Basal cell is rarely deadly and can become extremely disfiguring if left untreated.

Below you can see some pictures of what basal cell skin cancer looks like:

Nice stuff!

But you should also add "squamous cell carcinoma" and "kaposi sarcoma". Is important to talk about that to ;)

Keep the good work!

My grampa has brown spots all over his arms and face, that kinda look a little like Melanoma. But he has been to the doctors, and I guess they would have told him he had it, so i'm guessing he doesn't? I'm not sure, but it worries me because they look the same :( and I really dont want him to die when he doesn't even know it.

My mother died disfugured with skin cancer. She was 82 and said whatever the good Lord gave her she was taking with her to her grave and she did just that. Her lack of fear of dying was so profound because of her faith and I can only hope that her courage is passed on to me.
